this is a short documentary style art film i made as a collab with my beautiful, talented girlfriend sarah. it focuses on the concept behind her new series of manhole cover rubbings. initially this was going to be a straight forward documentary but then after spending a little time with the video footage (shot by myself as well as charles kephart) i decided to make this more of a textured collage style video so as to contrast the finished pieces themselves but also to best detail the process and concept in a short time period without leaving out too much of what there is to show.

it's narrated by an interview we recorded on my iphone one night after several beers, laying in bed, before falling asleep. it's a little silly, all due to me and my poor grammar in such states of inebriation but it's honest and simple and in my opinion, beautiful.

a link to this piece will accompany her first finished, framed manhole cover rubbing that will be displayed this friday as part of the SENSES group show at SHIFT SPACE GALLERY that i'll also be showing a new collage assemblage piece

FUTURE EVENTS APPEAR REAL (F.E.A.R)

i've been meaning to post a something or other about this show with katie sykes and michael pointer for weeks now but crazy week turned into crazy month then months, and so on and now the show is here, tomorrow in fact. we just got most everything up on the walls at tangent lab last night. i've still got a little more work to do on an installation i put together but yeah.. it's mostly ready. really pleased with the end results. this will be the most elaborate installation i've done, which incorporates found objects, video loops created specifically for the show and a found sound / ambient collage, of sorts. i'd post pics of it but being that it's not completely put together i'll wait til after the show.. or better yet just come see it.

the theme of the show initially was "apocalypse, end of the world" being that the 2012 whatever is approaching but i had a hard time coming up with something i liked so i abstracted the theme a bit to create works based around "the end of our world" as in the world two individuals create when in a long term romantic relationship, and not only the collapse of said created world but also snippets of time when things were grand + good with smiles galore.

all of this is a fictional ( i have the raddest lady ever) narrative based on past experiences of course but nevertheless a darker theme that i won't likely work within on such a large scale for a while (that shit is depressing). but hopefully the story (told through a series of QR codes placed on the title cards and integrated into the installation) is something anyone can relate to and perhaps make the viewer take an extra look at the pieces.

Sarah took a ton of pix from the opening reception and the pieces themselves, then Brandon and I shared the archiving duties of the show setup.It goes without saying that it was great to see everything come together. This was the largest, and most personal showing I've had in just about 4 years now, since my 2007 solo at Tangent Lab. Many shouts to all that came and to those who couldn't but were there in spirit. Created a series of mixes using a bunch of new tunes I've picked up over the past few months since moving into the new space. More or less this is the soundtrack to my life at the moment. The fuel to the creative fire that's been burning hot as of late. Part one is mostly droney noisey kinda shit.. part two is mostly beats and has a song at the very end I made using samples of Harper G playing her toy drum kit as the source for all the percussion sounds.

was nice enough to loan a few of his vintage deck collection to show. yes.. that's an O.G GONZ
VISION deck. so cool.

This is the first of several shows I have coming up here in the next few months
and something I've been wanting to do for a long time now. It's no secret that just
about everyone working actively in the visual arts today takes a great deal of inspiration
from the culture of skateboarding. Before the internet made it so easy to find out what's
cool we were forced to get out there and put in work. I can think of no other single
entity that embodied all the things that molded my tastes to what they are today than
skateboarding. Whether it was Thrasher or Big Brother magazine or the countless
number of videos taking us to places we'd never seen, playing music we'd never
heard.

Then of course there are the decks. The literal art of the skateboard. My first exposure
to the world of art that truly blew my mind. Designed by an endless who's who list of artists
from all over the spectrum. An art gallery on wheels that loses it's original gallery presentation
after the first ride. A shame, almost.

Almost a shame, but not, as after the decks are ridden they take on a new life, grow character
and tell the story of the person who rides it. You'll never forget eating it on the stairs of the
library when the chunk off the nose of your deck is a reminder. Or the red streak of paint through
the Anti-Hero pigeon graphic that you got from grinding all the way down a 20 foot rail. Or
having to write a girl's phone number on the bottom of your deck with a fat tip sharpie
because you didn't have a piece of paper to write it on. Like postcards or souvenir spoons
from family trips. But better. Because you're not at Silver Dollar City with your parents.
You're out killing it with your homeys, hollering at girls, tagging walls to tell anyone
who later comes along that you were there, or simply getting out of your head for the
day, bugging out with your headphones on a solo crosstown journey. Your deck is there.

To this day Ed Templeton and Mark Gonzales remain two of my idols. Their distinctive style of simple, child-like hand drawn illustrations and "proper design" along with their ability to seamlessly blend the worlds of skateboarding and art into businesses that I'm sure more than simply fund
their livelihood and has also put them at the forefront of the gallery circuit for all of their artistic
endeavors. I think if you ask anyone their heroes in skateboarding you'll get Ed and Gonz far
more than Tony.

GET RAD! is being organized by Mr. Christopher Trenary, artist and owner of NOTES AND
NOISES record store and Matt Headley, artist and owner of RED SEA TATTOO. I've contributed
a few poster and postcard designs to the mix and will have a deck in the show as well. ANTIMOSITY
will be performing. This will without a doubt be a hot, sweaty, wicked show. The first of it's kind for Wichita. And it's not on a Final Friday cuz that shit kinda sucks now so everyone there wants to be there. For the art, not the free finger foods and cheap wine (neither of those things will be present at this show) Come out!

just sent off final artwork to the pressing plant for ANTIMOSITY's debut album with DJ MIX A MYTE 1. it's a pretty cool concept album where the bulk of the instrumentals were produced using samples from artists based, or raised here in wichita. they spent over a year on it and are putting it out themselves 100% independently on the newly formed MADWEST MUSIC GROUP label. this will be release MDWST001.

as with any album art i do i'm very honored to have gotten the opportunity to be the visual representation of someone's hard work, their labor of love.. or for that matter their life summed up, for the duration of it's production.

these are the digital versions of the entire campaign. i'll try to get some good images of the printed, completed products as they come back. but better yet, go grab one after the 26th of this month. they'll be everywhere around town or on amazon and itunes for out of town headz. tees will be available at the shows or on the BIG MENTION STORE as soon as we get them in.

PALE MOONS ARE USUALLY SAD

I'm EXTREMELY excited to be finally putting the finishing touches on the art and packaging for the album. I just got the master from Chris last week and can't say enough good things about how great of a job Paul @ Deep Search Audio did with making the songs sound amazing.

We should have some copies ready to pick up by the show on the 27th. I think anyone who has heard Chris' previous work will see the progression and maturation to where he is now. For those that aren't familiar with his past projects I think this album will no doubt make you want to go dig the webs and find him out. A lot of it is out of print, but we may have to do something about that.

Also coming up will be the release of the remix project from a few of the tracks on Pale Moons.. as well as the companion full length DOWN AND OUT ON QUEEN STREET, which Chris made simultaneously with Pale Moons. These songs lean more towards a stripped down acoustic sound but carry the same weight as the fuzzed out, drum machined tracks on Pale Moons. There will be a standard packaged version of the album as well as a deluxe book version packaged with Pale Moons. We will be working together on these releases as a Fawn Tape Digital / BIG MENTION cooperative.

There's talks of perhaps getting Chris out on an east coast tour in the fall and some local shows coming up with the full band version THE DEATHBLACK FLOWERS.

STANLEY ELEMENTARY FOUND ART PROJECT

i was asked to visit the 5th graders at stanley elementary and help

them get started on some found art collages that will be attached

and hung as an installation at the school.

the children were asked to bring items from home to use in the

pieces but some materials were also provided.

stanley elementary has a high poverty rate amongst it's students and

many of the children have not been exposed to art in the traditional

manner. it is a great honor to be able to help with things like this.

this is why we are here, to help out however we can. in my humble

personal opinion anyway. i wish i could do more.

In addition to the mix CD's (see previous post) I also have these new books which, as the title suggests, collect various pieces made over the past decade. It was tough sifting through a mountain of archives and photos to find the things that best represent my entire body of work during that time period, and in the end I scrapped the idea of trying to show any sort of artistic growth or maturation and just picked things I liked. There's no order or specific sequence to the book, it simply is a bunch of shit I did that I like and thought maybe other people might like too.. enough to pay me money for a bound copy of them.

Additionally, among the completed works are unedited pieces of source material from my now massive collection. I thought it would be relevant to show some of these in their found state as often times I mutilate them to fit my own needs. It should be fairly clear what is something I made and what is something I found, but nothing is notated, because honestly, I'm too lazy for that. It's enough for me to just have put it together. Maybe the next one will have notations. But probably not.

There are several different covers available and I only have a few of these at the moment but they are 100 pages printed on acid free stock and spiral bound for easy tracing / copying. They're $50 each and come packaged with the FOUND SOUND mix and two 5x7 prints on watercolor stock. They'll be on etsy next week but will go for a little more than that, and not packaged with the CD. If I owe you money or if I've been an asshole, jerk, prick, or anything of that nature and one of these books would help make that right, please by all means let me give you one. Of course I'd need to agree with you that I was any of those things, but chances are I will.

As part of my "FOUND SOUND" collage series (pieces made out of 95% recycled / found materials) I made a mix of various tunes, mostly of the beat-oriented nature. Each CD has it's own unique cover using various images from older projects and from my source material archive. Each is packaged in a 100% recycled folder with 2 prints on watercolor stock and is numbered and signed by yours truly (because that makes it worth more, right?)

I'll have these for sale next week at my etsy store, as soon as I get it updated and looking nice, but they're ready to go now so if you're interested in one gimme a shout.. only $10 (they'll be $15+ shipping on etsy)!

I really can't say enough about Mr. Banksy and his "documentary" EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP. If you haven't seen it, you should do so. Even if you aren't the slightest bit interested in "street art". All debate of whether or not it's a hoax put aside, it's an amazing statement about our society in general and how quickly we are to jump on whatever the next big thing is, despite whether or not it has any true substance. And even if you choose not to take that from it, it is hilarious and sad and has some super rare footage of some of the biggest names in graffiti and street art. I've never finished watching a film and felt more compelled to make, or do something important.

I feel that this recent total lunar eclipse falling on the winter solstice brought with it a great deal of change. Some of which I'm resistant to, some of which I welcome. Im going to focus on the welcomed changes and let the ones I'm resisting work themselves out.

I used to spend a lot of time making "music". When I did do shows or songs I did so under the name La La Lexica,
I have since changed it to Sures. I don't know why. It just sounded good. Had a long weekend so I spent some time
toying around with found sounds making ambient tunes and some video collage pieces. Here's the first thing.
I called it "Likewise" It's super pixelated and I can't tell if it maintained the stereo effects but you get the idea.

For those not familiar with Mr. Mackie and his wide range of musical outputs over the years, don't worry.
He has made it a point to keep things low key. His most well known endeavor would likely be with the
band Sonna, in the late 90's and early 2000's. Jeremy Devine was also a member and went on to
create Temporary Residence Ltd., which has a release catalog more superb than just about any
indie label of the past 15 years, including one of Chris' solo efforts as Christopher Flores called
'Testing the Blues' which I did the artwork for a few years back. It truly was a masterpiece, in my humble
opinion, utilizing programmed electronics textured with organic elements to create a sound truly his own.
"Heartbreaking" is the one word I'd offer to sum it up. Nearly all of it was recorded on his Macbook in
various locations along the east coast.

After moving back to Kansas, following the breakup of Sonna, Chris started playing with local instrumental
favorites This Great October (which I also did a bunch of arts for and need to post on here). It was through
here that I met Chris and formed a friendship. During this time period, along with Torin Andersen and Aaron
Mitchael among others, Chris and myself played improvisational shows as La La Lexica.

Then, as many people from Wichita do (myself included), Chris moved away then back again and we played
a few more shows as Deathblack Flowers, before he moved away yet again, back out to the nation's capital.
This is where Chris' work shifted from electronically based instrumentals to more of a singer songwriter steez.
Which is where his newest work finds him. It has come full circle and I'm proud to be able to call him
a collaborator and of course friend.

He has a new website with several downloads and videos. Take a minute and check it out.

If you hadn't noticed already, the opening for my show "For Monday Myths" didn't happen. It simply was a result of poor timing. The bulk of the work was already completed but I wasn't able to dedicate the time and resources that would have been essential to me making the show everything I wanted it to be. Sadly, this happens from time to time but I'm hoping to take what I had completed and add it to what I'm working on currently and have an even better show a little further down the line.

On another note, the print show in September at the Alibi Room was a hit and INDELIBLE was a massive success at Tangent Lab last weekend. I haven't had that much fun at a show in quite a while. Many thanks go to everyone involved.. I won't start spouting off a bunch of names because I know I'll inevitably forget someone important. You know who you are. Many hearts to you. If you missed out on the event, unfortunately it was a one night only thing but there will still be pieces available for purchase, later on this week. Stop in to Hell Bomb and ask to see what's left if you're looking to buy. And get tattooed while you're at it.

This will be my first solo outing in 3 years,

almost to the day, October 29. I've

been working pretty consistantly on things

in that time period, trying out new things,

trying to make better work as time goes

on. I may or may not have succeeded in

doing so but I've worked very hard and

put a lot of my soul into this work so I

hope that people enjoy it.

This show is being hosted by PROJECT.

I am honored to be one of the very lucky

few who have shown there in the past

several years. When I first started becoming

involved in the art scene and working

towards having a show or organizing exhibits

PROJECT always stood out as a space I

wanted to be shown in. The atmosphere and

vibe is warm and welcoming with a gallery

space that's not too big, but not too small.

There is however a great deal of pressure

to produce a show that lives up to the high

standard of the gallery and I hope to be able

to do so.

I'm currently working on 3 small installations that

will be shown in addition to the 20 or so pieces

I already have completed. I'll post updates both

on here and on facebook. I like to know other

artist's process so I assume there are a few others

out there curious as to how these silly things

come together.

Mizz Heather Eden once again has hooked me up and allowed me to do another event poster for the station. This one is for my longtime homeys, Spirit of the Stairs and friends.

The image above is the print-ready 2up version. It is 5.5"x17" as a completed piece. We were restricted to black and white but I enjoy working in that format so this was good fun. I was aiming for it to look like a poster for some sort of French avant gard film from the 1950's. It may, or not. I didn't research what those sorts of things actually looked like, I just made up an image in my head and tried to create that.

A FEW FREELANCE PROJECTS

Along with Steve Turner of Hell Bomb Tattoo I created an event poster for Wichita's local NPR station, KMUW 89.1. The goal was to come up with some sort of image and layout that represented Carl Kassel as NPR's "rock star". I'm not sure how closely I got to that goal but I am very pleased with the final outcome.

Additionally, Simone Chickenbone, of "Chickenpoop" Lip Balm fame started up a new company called "White Teefe Spray Tan" that does private spray tan parties. I did the logo and business cards and am grateful for the opportunity to have done so.

Haven't posted in a while so I thought I'd throw a few images of recent things on here. All of the collages are collaborations with Rachel Ablah. She has been doing drawings onto vintage photographs and geometrical paintings that are coming out looking amazing and seem to work really well with what I do. I'm really enjoying these pieces. Both the collaboration process and the finished product. Whether or not anyone else digs them remains to be seen.

Also starting a series of freehand sharpie drawings on cardboard panels. These 2 are just tests but I kinda like them anyway. The guy with the beard is a straight up bite of a drawing my friend Heath did. He's way better.

Another one for the 143 group show. I think I should mention that all sales from this show go directly to Tangent Lab to help keep it going. Over the past 5 years the gallery has become a cultural center in Wichia for not just visual art but film, music, fashion and theater. Brad Ruder, the operator of the space has been solely responsible for it's success and pays for much of the event cost out of his own pocket. I can't say enough how important this gallery is to the city. To me, it's been the most consistent gallery in the city, among many great spaces. Any amount of success I've personally found in the exhibition of my pictures would not have been possible without Brad, and Tangent Lab, so for that I am grateful.
